About pdftomd.tools
pdftomd.tools is a small set of free converters between PDF and Markdown that run entirely in your browser tab. It is written and maintained by the pdftomd.tools team.

What it does
There are three tools: a PDF to Markdown converter, a batch converter that turns several files into one ZIP of .md files, and a Markdown to PDF export. The other pages are guides for specific jobs, such as preparing files for an LLM or an Obsidian vault.
How it works
Reading a PDF uses Mozilla's open-source pdf.js to get each text run with its position and font. Our own code then rebuilds headings, lists, tables and code blocks from that layout and removes repeated headers, footers and page numbers.
Writing a PDF renders your Markdown with marked, measures every word on an off-screen A4 page, and draws it as real, selectable text with pdf-lib, embedding only the glyphs it needs from Inter, JetBrains Mono and Noto Sans.
What it does not do
- No OCR. A scanned, image-only PDF has no text layer, so the output is empty or nearly empty.
- No server-side conversion. Your files are not uploaded.
- No account or sign-up, and no analytics or advertising cookies today.
How we test
Changes run against fixed test files before they ship: twelve table layouts, multi-page reports in English and Chinese, and a round trip from Markdown to PDF and back. When a page gives a number from those runs, it says so with the words “in our tests”. Other facts link to their source.
Who we are
Pages are signed and dated by the pdftomd.tools team rather than by individual authors. Each page shows the date it was last updated, and the same date appears in its structured data.
